I’m 56.
It’s March 8, 2022, and I’m 56. I feel like I have better musical ideas now than ever, I feel like I can play and sing at a fairly high level (for me). I’m working on a new album of electronic pop, a genre that won’t want to have anything to do with an old guy like me, but I don’t care…
But guess what genres don’t care how old I am? Jazz, and Progressive Rock, and I’m very attracted to Prog Rock (with a little jazz). I’m not a jazz musician, but I did play in jazz band in both high school and college (piano, guitar, and trumpet, if anyone cares).
I’m listening to Snarky Puppy as I type this – they’re amazing.
I don’t have killer chops, so prog is a better bet than jazz. The other genre I can do as an old useless fart is folk, and I did indeed already do a folk album.
I’m listening to a ton of prog lately – I’m really into The Tangent and Porcupine Tree as well as Moron Police, old Genesis, Steven Wilson, Pineapple Thief, and a few more. Cool chord progressions and little rock melodies. Remember Kansas? They were prog, to me.
Did you ever feel guided towards a genre because no other genre wants you because of your sex, age, looks, weight, etc? In this modern age of inclusiveness, we still have rampant ageism in the music business.
