I watch maybe one hour a week of regular TV, maybe 4 hours a week of Netflix or Hulu, and the rest is YouTube. YouTube has almost completely replaced everything else. I am a Patreon supporter of several channels. I think everyone with a job who watches a lot of YouTube should support at least one channel. It’s a buck a month. C’mon, now.
Anyway, I’m including my full Sub list because I figure if you love guitars like I do, you might love some of the other things, too. Or not. Regardless, my list:
- 8-Bit Keys. Great channel that covers what I’d consider toy keyboards. It’s a very nerdy channel.
- Alan Parsons. Because I’m a huge fan.
- Andertons Music Co. My favorite channel. Lee Anderton and Rob Chapman have because our friends – always entertaining, often informative, and always worth watching.
- Arcade Hunters. I built my own arcade cabinet with emulation for tons of games. I love old arcade games. Technically I didn’t build it – I assembled a kit from a company. More on that below.
- arcadeimpossible. I was a Patron of this channel, but they basically don’t make content, so I stopped. But I freaking LOVE the videos in this channel. In a different life, I’m one of the guys on that channel. They seem like great guys.
- Chris Coyier. This is a channel for web developers, which is my day job, and which I enjoy a lot.
- Cinemassacre. The Angry Videogame Nerd is a ridiculous over the top character and I love it.
- ClanOfTheGrayWolf. Great channel about classic gaming.
- Dave’s World of Fun Stuff. The angry Canadian guitar repairman. I love Dave’s channel. I don’t like how much he feels the need to bash StewMac, but his complaints are usually kind of accurate. Dave is the grumpy uncle you like.
- Elevated Jam Tracks. I love jam tracks. I think they’re way better than a metronome.
- Eric Daw. Eric does a fantastic guitar repair podcast. He has a fantastic YouTube channel, but sadly there’s almost no content on it. Great guy, very smart, knows his stuff.
- Fender. Why do I bother? I love Fender, but they clearly don’t understand how to use YouTube. Sometimes they have good videos. Mostly they’re bad commercials that don’t connect with anyone on any level. Epiphone had that crazy “Doctor Epiphone” guy, who was entertaining. Fender has artsy fartsy commercials.
- FriendlyCosmonaut. This is a channel about programming videogames using Gamemaker, which I have. Programming is my fifth or sixth hobby. I forget. It’s good to keep busy.
- Game Sack. Two old farts like me, making bad dad jokes and playing and talking about games. I love it.
- GameRoomSolutions. This is the company I bought my arcade cabinet kit from. I highly recommend them. Ryan answered all of my email questions and he packed and shipped everything very well.
- Gaming Historian. If you like Nintendo and stuff like that, check this channel out. Norm is amazing. AMAZING. These are documentaries on video games and the industry. He’s the best at what he does.
- Gibson Guitar. Only slightly less clueless than Fender. Really, if you want to learn about the history of Gibson, or how the guitars are made, or about why artists use them, look elsewhere. This is mostly marketing fluff with a few good videos in there somewhere.
- Guitar Interactive. Good channel with good content.
- Guitar Nerds. Mostly I just listen to their heavily biased (Boss and Fender) podcast. But the channel is cool.
- Guitarfetish TV. GuitarFetish is a website that sells extremely cheap guitar parts. I like them. They have a channel, but it hasn’t been updated in a year. They’re really, really, really missing the boat by not exploiting YouTube.
- Guitarist. A lot of guitar playing. I think this channel is OK.
- Highline Guitars. A channel about building guitars. A little dry, but I like this channel.
- James Lileks. One of the funniest guys around, but he doesn’t post to his channel. Why am I still subscribed?
- JHS Pedals. Josh Scott is a nerd and I dig his channel.
- John’s Arcade Games. “Hey guys! We are IN… the basement!” John is an arcade games nerd. I made the mistake of listening to his podcast, and it’s awful. Lots of putting people down and swearing. But I enjoy his channel a lot, where he doesn’t swear and he’s really positive. Very nerdy arcade cabinet channel.
- Kevin Keinert. This channel is about old amusement games.
- Let’s GET!! This is about video games. It might be defunct at this point, but the videos are fun.
- LGR. Yet another video game dude who has a channel. I like it. It’s a bit goofy, but I like it.
- Livingroom Gear Demos. Finally, another GUITAR channel! I like his take on things.
- Luthiers Corner. About guitar building.
- Marshall Amplification. Sense a pattern? Another huge gear maker who doesn’t get YouTube. This is about product demos. They think people want to watch commercials. We are willing to watch their commercials, but they don’t engage us. There are some interviews, but they’re like 2 minutes long.
- MetalJesusRocks. Another gaming channel I like.
- Miche Fambro. A friend of mine from New York who is a killer guitarist/singer/songwriter.
- Mr. Fastfinger – Mika Tyyskä. I had to paste the last name with the dots over the a because I don’t know how to make my keyboard do that. This is a neat channel you should check out. Mika is a shredder.
- Music is Win. Tyler is a smart guy and a very good player. I like this channel. It’s a little goofy, but I like goofy.
- My Life in Gaming. A channel about gaming.
- National Jukebox Exchange. Cool old jukeboxes and other stuffs.
- NESComplex. Great channel about classic games.
- OBrienGuitars. A channel about guitar building.
- OfficialEpiphone. Do I have to say anything, at this point? See Fender/Gibson/Marshall. What happened to Doctor Epiphone? Of the 4, Epiphone has the best channel, but that’s not saying much. I remain a big fan of Epiphone. I have two Epi Les Pauls.
- Pete Thorn. Killer guitar player, nice guy, makes everything he plays sound great.
- Phillip McKnight. I like him. Some don’t, because he’s honest about products, but I do. I think he gives good advice and knows his stuff. I dig his channel.
- Premier Guitar. John is a great reviewer and a great guy. I miss Rebecca Dirks because she was a real person and not “guitar dude/man/guy”. Nothing beats Rig Rundown.
- Produce Like A Pro. I’m a member of Warren’s academy. I’m going to review it at some point. Warren makes great videos about audio recording.
- PRS Guitars. AHA! PRS sometimes gets it. Some of their videos are great – very informative. But of course, some are boring commercials, too. At least they partially understand YouTube.
- Rabea Massaad. We met him on the Andertons channel. Bea is a very, very good guitar player, and I like his channel.
- Retroware. All about classic videogames.
- Rob Chapman. Rob is a visionary. He’s a great guitarist, but he’s a great guitar personality. His videos are almost always interesting, regardless of the topic. He’s a self-made success story. Do I like any of his music? Not really. Doesn’t matter.
- Seymour Duncan. The company makes great pickups, and some of the videos on the channel are interesting.
- stewartmacdonald. If you are interested in guitar repair, this channel is the best resource on earth. Awesome, awesome, awesome channel. Great videos. Yes, they overcharge for things. It’s not for the cheapskates. It’s for people who want to do professional work.
- Techmoan. Great British show about old technology.
- That Pedal Show. I’m not that into pedals, but this is a great channel. Dan and Mick are very interesting guys who’ve been in this biz a real long time. They know their stuff.
- The 8-Bit Guy. Great retro computer channel.
- The Doug and Pat Show. Two guys older than me who love old guitars. Very entertaining show. These guys know TONE.
- The Game Chasers. A show about old video games.
- Tim Pierce Guitar. Tim is a session guitarist who has played on a billion albums. He has some great videos on playing and gear.
- Tom Bailey Backing Tracks. Another very good backing tracks channel.
- vintagecoinop. Killer channel about old coin operated games.
- Wampler Pedals. I have two Wamplers on my pedal board right now. Great channel. Brian Wampler understands YouTube. His channel isn’t solely about pimping his own products. He often talks up the competition and uses their pedals in his videos. WHAT? Yeah. But it has worked out well for Wampler Pedals. JHS does it too. I think it’s smart – those guys are just being real, and we connect with them. The big companies either don’t get it or are run by millionaires who are out of touch with modern times.
- Wildwood Guitars. Greg Koch is a killer guitar player who does guitar demonstrations. Plus he’s very funny.
There you go. This took FOREVER to do, but my hope is that you find at least one new interesting channel in the list.
My favorite channel? I couldn’t pick just one. But the two that I’ve matched the most are probably Andertons and StewMac.
